Tanzania
Dar es Salaam is one of the fastest growing cities of Africa. The port plays an important role in Africa's development. The city's scale may proof a serious benefit in improving it's dire waste management situation. This was the conclusion of a scoping mission performed together with MetaSus and Rijkswaterstaat and initiated by the Dutch embassy in Tanzania in 2016.
It was followed by setting up a roadmap for collaboration between the Netherlands and Tanzania/Dar.
It comprises a number of projects on enhancing waste collection, remediation of the Pugu dumpsite and improving organisation and finance. Finance often seems to be the factor inhibiting real progress in this field. The scale of Dar es Salaam however proved to be more than sufficient to provide sustainable and affordable waste services.
